GRAVEL AND SALT - CAR INSURANCE

OUR STARTING POINT: UNDERSTANDING THE INSURANCE GAP

As we planned our overland trip across Europe and into Africa, we quickly realized that typical car insurance policies, like the 'green insurance card' commonly used in Europe, wouldn't cover our journey beyond the continent. We faced a big question: Should we attempt this adventure without car insurance, or should we seek coverage that would protect us throughout our travels? Since we’re keeping our car registered in Germany, we needed a comprehensive solution that would provide peace of mind as we navigate unfamiliar terrains.

FINDING THE RIGHT COVERAGE: A PATH FULL OF CHALLENGES

After much deliberation, we decided that insuring our car was the best option for our trip. Local insurance at border crossings was an option, but we were unsure about the reliability of these policies.

Additionally, we needed insurance that would be valid upon our car's arrival via ship, which meant we couldn't simply rely on local options. Given our car’s robustness and the high value of vehicles in places like Cape Town, we deemed it too risky to travel uninsured.

After extensive research, we found Jahn and Partner, who offered car insurance that included coverage for Africa. This required a release from our existing insurer, which was a lengthy process. Eventually, we managed to secure an offer through Helvetia, facilitated by Jahn and Partner.

THE PERSONAL SIDE OF INSURANCE DECISIONS

Choosing to insure our car was a personal decision rooted in our need for financial security during our budgeted travels. We understand that others might prefer to save money and take the risk of traveling without insurance, but that approach wasn't suitable for us. Knowing we are covered against potential accidents allows us to focus on enjoying our journey without worrying about unexpected costs.

As we await the final details, we feel relieved and prepared for the adventures ahead. We recommend considering all options and making an informed choice that aligns with your travel plans and risk tolerance.
